Beyond the garden and swimming pool, the grounds of the Château are here for you to explore. A haven for wildlife, you can often see otter, red squirrel, deer, hare, tree frogs, turtles and an enormous variety of birds, including the golden oriel and the nightingale, which sings throughout the spring and early summer. The migration path of the Siberian cranes passes directly overhead, making a spectacular sight in spring and autumn as they fly over in great, gaggling skeins. The lack of light pollution makes the night sky fascinatingly beautiful, with shooting stars a regular occurrence.
If you decide to do something more active, then the following activities are all on-site or less than ten minutes away:
- Walking / running - including two clearly marked circuits through the countryside around the village and plenty more around nearby Aubeterre
- Cycling - bike hire is available at Aubeterre - we have two bikes available on free loan. From Aubeterre there is a network of 10 trails, classified from very easy to difficult, which provide a marvellous way to enjoy some beautiful panoramic views. In addition there is good, varied cycling in every direction from Château Le Mas de Montet.
- Horse riding - with several stables a short drive away
- Tennis - several courts just 5 minutes away
- Canoeing - from Aubeterre, Parcoul or Riberac
- Swimming - in the River Dronne a short walk away, at the river beach at Aubeterre, or at the lake of La Jemaye
- Coarse fishing - in the River Dronne. Over a mile of the riverbank borders the Château grounds
- French and Spanish classes or private tuition
- Wine and chocolate tasting - at the wine school, within walking distance. More regional wine information is available on our wine page.
With the Atlantic coast 70 miles to the west, you might even choose to spend a day or two at the sea. Royan is a traditional seaside resort, whilst there are excellent surfing facilities at Lacanau-Océan.
